PAIR OF 5 BAR GATES HUNG BETWEEN POSTS
5 Bar gates are typically hung on the rear face of the posts, but in some situations they may need to be mounted between the posts instead. This setup can allow the gates to open in both directions. In either case, it is essential that the posts are positioned accurately, taking into account the exact width of the gates, as well as the space required for the chosen gate fittings. Correct installation is essential. Quality, well-made 5 Bar gates will only perform as intended if they are properly supported, aligned and fitted using the right hardware.
Gate hinge positions & gate fitting tolerances

A = Adjustable double strap field hinge set | B = Loop over latch
C = Pair of drop bolts & sockets (one for each gate) | D = Hanging stile
Gates must be hung from the larger hanging stiles (D) unless it is a universal gate with both stiles the same size.
A minimum of 50mm ground clearance should be allowed when hanging the gate.

As the gates and posts are a natural material, some movement may occur with changes in temperature and humidity. The hinges (A) can be adjusted to allow for seasonal movement in the timber.
Measurements are based on the fittings supplied by Charltons and are intended as a guide. We recommend an experience fitter installs the gates.
Automated gates require a heavy-duty bottom rail, either flush or standard depending on the type of automation you are having. They should be installed and commissioned by a qualified gate automation specialist. Standard gate fittings should be suitable; however, please consult your automation specialist, as automated gates may require alternative fittings.
Gate openings
In this position the gates open inwards and outwards to and from the property up to 90° (assuming no object in the way).
A gate should not open onto a public highway or pavement in accordance with the Highways Act 1980.

We do not recommend that the gates are left open for any length of time. If the gates are to be left in the open position, an extra socket should be fitted so that the drop bolt can be used to secure the gates whilst open, no more than 90° past the post so that the gates do not bend, excess pressure is not exerted on the hinges, and they cannot blow shut and cause injury. Drop bolts must be installed using the supplied socket sets. Leaving the drop bolt loose, especially in gravel, can lead to the gates warping or being damaged.

Gate post recommendations
For most gates, particularly heavier designs, the gate posts should ideally be installed approximately 3ft (900mm) into the ground to provide adequate support. Posts set too shallow may become loose, move over time, or begin to lean, placing additional strain on the gate and its ironmongery. Shallow posts are also more susceptible to frost heave, where freezing ground conditions can gradually lift them out of position. To help prevent this, the post hole should be wider at the bottom than at the top, creating a bell-shaped footing that helps lock the concrete securely into the ground. The post should be UC4 treated. This is a timber treatment standard designed for wood in permanent contact with the ground.

Gate automation
5 Bar gates can be automated with the addition of a heavy-duty rail. This is required for the gate to withstand the stresses of the automation movement. 5 Bar gates can have a standard or a flush heavy-duty rail depending on the type of automation being used.
Automated gates must be installed by a fully qualified installer who must ensure the installation complies with the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008
As the owner of an automated gate, you are technically the owner of a machine, which just like your car requires routine maintenance. The gate should be checked over by a qualified installer every six months as a minimum.

Gate treatment
Pressure treatment provides protection against fungal decay and insect attack but does not prevent weathering caused by sunlight and moisture. The elements and UV rays will slowly degrade the effectiveness of the pressure treatment. We therefore recommend that all planed timber gates are treated with a modern UV-protection oil for planed timber such as Osmo (Softwood gates once they have thoroughly dried out). This is particularly important when hanging 5 Bar gates as it will help alleviate potential warping due to weathering and UV rays.

PLEASE NOTE: Timber is a natural material and will expand, contract and move with changes in temperature and moisture levels. Minor twisting, bowing and surface cracking are normal characteristics of timber and do not affect the structural integrity of the gate.

Manual gate maintenance
Best practice: Re-check hinge adjustment and gate clearances several weeks after installation as timber and new posts may settle.
Manual installations should be supported by a regular maintenance regime. The time intervals between maintenance checks will be largely determined by the amount of usage the gate is expected to tolerate. A low usage situation would represent up to 50 operations a day; low usage gates should be checked at least every 12 months. If there are any changes in the gate, for example, if the gate drags on the ground, this could be a sign that urgent attention is required to avoid compromising the safety of the gate.
Challenging weather conditions, such as high winds/gales and heavy rain can cause damage to a gate and/or affect the foundations. Routine checks should always be made once the bad weather has subsided. The following should be checked:
- Review hinges for signs of excessive wear and tear e.g. damage, cracking
- Check the foundations for any signs of movement
- Look out for any indication that the material from which the gate has been crafted has in any way been compromised e.g. gates showing signs of excessive cracks
- Check that all ancillary equipment e.g., drop bolts and catches are working as expected. Any component showing excessive wear or more than 15% damage , a replacement should be considered.
