HOW TO MEASURE FOR A PEDESTRIAN GATE
Taking accurate measurements is the first step in selecting the correct pedestrian gate, helping to ensure a proper fit and smooth operation
Posts and walls are rarely completely straight and evenly aligned particularly when they are existing openings. Whether the structure is old or newly built, the most important rule is to take accurate measurements to calculate the width & height of your gate.
Tolerances are given for using hinges supplied by Charltons.
Measuring for the width of a gate
Take three measurements of your entrance way; the top, middle & bottom of the walls/pillars as these may vary. Always use the narrowest measurement.
Using the narrowest measurement subtract the fixing posts (if hung between walls), the hinge and closing gaps and you will have the overall physical width of your gate.
Measuring for the height of a gate
The height of a gate depends the height of your walls/pillars
Planning permission will be needed if gates are over 1m high and next to a highway used by vehicles or be over 2m high (from ground level) and sited elsewhere, such as a back garden. For more information check the Planning Portal.
Measure the height from the ground at each side of the opening adjacent to the walls/pillars. Make sure that any high spots in the entrance way are allowed for in your measurements, as opening and closing gates over these high spots may cause damage. Use the smallest measurement. Minus 50mm for ground clearance to get the height of your gate.
