Mortice & tenon joint

Mortice & tenon joint

Charltons Driveway Gates and 5 Bar gates are made using Mortice and Tenon Joints. This time honoured and proven method of construction. It is one of the most vital parts of a gate,  however it can never be seen!

Woodworkers around the world have used it for many thousands of years to join pieces of  wood together (mainly when at right angles). When properly designed, proportioned and well made, mortise and tenon joints are neat in appearance and very strong.

Although there are variation  of the joint the basic mortice and tenon comprises two components; the mortise hole and the tenon tongue. Charltons uses precision cutting so that the joint has a very snug fit. The tolerance of the joint is  0.2 mm. The tenon tongue has small cuts across the wood which allows the tongue to hold more glue.

Only the round hardwood dowels (on Courtyard and premium 5 bar gates) on the reverse of the gate indicates where they are.
