Over the last year Charltons have been carrying out research into gate treatments.  As a result, Charltons now recommend a modern UV oil such as Restol Natural UV Extra Wood Oil as a gate treatment for all our wooden gates. One of the reasons for the research and year long trial has been that existing products have had key ingredients removed over years. As and when new laws have been passed by Europe about the safety of these ingredient they have been removed from treatment products. These treatments have become less effective as a result. Preservatives have to be applied prior to using them to provide full protection against rot and fungi.

We currently send out all of our softwood courtyard gates with 2 coats of preservative. All a customer needs to do is apply the UV oil (Iroko hardwood gates just need the UV oil). The UV filter helps preserves the colour of the wood and stops wood drying out unevenly, which can lead to warping. As you can see from the pressure treated softwood samples below, applying a UV oil has a marked effect at reducing splits, checks and warping.
