SIDE GATES AND GARDEN GATES HUNG BETWEEN POSTS
Hanging a side gate or garden gate between posts is a key step in creating a secure and functional outdoor space. Correct installation is highly important. A quality, well-made gate will only perform as intended if it is properly supported, aligned and fitted using the right hardware.

Charltons Pedestrian Gate range are universally hung i.e., can be hung from either side. However, ideally on taller & heavier gates, hinges should be placed on the side with both braces in the corners (C) for maximum support of the gate. As the gate and posts are a natural material, some movement may occur with changes in temperature and humidity. The hinges (A) can be adjusted to allow for seasonal movement in the timber.
*A cranked band & hook pin on plate hinge can be used. However, this type of hinge does not allow for any adjustment should there be any movement in the post.

Measurements are based on the fittings supplied by Charltons and are intended as a guide. We recommend that gates are installed by an experienced professional.
A minimum of 50mm ground clearance should be allowed when hanging the gate.
Gate opening
In this position the gate opens inwards to the property up to 180° (assuming no object in the way).

A gate should not open onto a public highway or pavement in accordance with the Highways Act 1980.

Posts set too shallow may become loose, move over time, or begin to lean, placing additional strain on the gate and its ironmongery. Shallow posts are also more susceptible to frost heave, where freezing ground conditions can gradually lift them out of position. To help prevent this, the post hole should be wider at the bottom than at the top, creating a bell-shaped footing that helps lock the concrete securely into the ground. Post should be UC4 treated. This a timber treatment standard designed for wood in permanent contact with the ground.

Gate treatment
Pressure treatment provides protection against fungal decay and insect attack but does not prevent weathering caused by sunlight and moisture. The elements and UV rays will slowly degrade the effectiveness of the pressure treatment. We therefore recommend that all planed timber gates are treated with a modern UV-protection oil for planed timber such as Osmo (Softwood gates once they have thoroughly dried out). This is particularly important when hanging 5 Bar gates as it will help alleviate potential warping due to weathering and UV rays. For more information please visit:

PLEASE NOTE: Timber is a natural material and will expand, contract and move with changes in temperature and moisture levels. Minor twisting, bowing and surface cracking are normal characteristics of timber and do not affect the structural integrity of the gate.
Gate maintenance
Best practice: Re-check hinge adjustment and gate clearances several weeks after installation as timber and new posts may settle.
Manual installations should be supported by a regular maintenance regime. The time lapses between maintenance checks will be largely determined by the amount of usage the gate is expected to tolerate. A low usage situation would represent up to 50 operations a day; a low usage gates should be checked at least every 12 months. If there are any changes in the gate, for example, if the gate drags on the ground, this could be a sign that urgent attention required to avoid compromising the safety of the gate.
Challenging weather conditions, such as high winds/gales and heavy rain can cause damage to a gate and/or affect the foundations. Routine checks should always be made once the bad weather has subsided. The following should be checked:
- Review hinges for signs of excessive wear and tear e.g. damage, cracking
- Check the foundations for any signs of movement
- Look out for any indication that the material from which the gate has been crafted has in any way been compromised e.g. gates showing signs of excessive cracks
- Check that all ancillary equipment e.g., drop bolts and catches are working as expected. If any is classed as featuring in excess of 15% damage, a replacement should be considered.
